Finding Strength in Every Season
Begin Your Journey to Emotional Wellness
Life brings seasons of stress, uncertainty, and emotional pain that can feel overwhelming. Coping skills can help us navigate stress in healthy ways. When combined with faith, these skills are strengthened with hope, purpose, and the reminder that we are not alone in our most difficult moments.
Scriptures for Strength and Comfort
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18 (Tree of Life Version)
“I leave the gift of peace with you—my peace. Not the kind of fragile peace given by the world, but my perfect peace. Don’t yield to fear or be troubled in your hearts—instead, be courageous!” – John 14:27 (The Passion Translation)
“Though we experience every kind of pressure, we’re not crushed. At times we don’t know what to do, but quitting is not an option. We may be knocked down, but not out”- 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (The Passion Translation)
“The Lord is my shepherd; I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside quiet waters. He renews my life; he leads me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger for you are with me; your rod and your staff- they comfort me…”- Psalm 23 (Christian Standard Bible)
Faith-based Coping Exercises
Faith-based Cognitive Coping
– Replacing negative thoughts with scripture (e.g., “I feel alone in this” to “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”- Isaiah 41:10
– Asking “What would God say about my situation?”
– Writing faith based affirmations and putting them where you will see them- “I am loved, chosen, and guided.”
– Practicing gratitude as an act of worship
– What is in God’s control vs my control?- Divide a page Into 2 columns, release what is in God’s control through prayer
– “God has done it before” Reflection- write past situations where God provided, then apply that evidence to current stress.
– Thought surrender visualization- Imagine placing intrusive thoughts into God’s hands or at the foot of the cross.
Faith-based Emotional Coping
– Praying openly about feelings (anger, sadness, fear)
– Journaling prayers or writing letters to God
– Reading Psalms that reflect current emotions
– Practicing surrender- “God I give this to you”
– Reminding self that your feelings are valid but not final
– “Sit with God in the feeling” practice- Instead of escaping the emotion, invite God into it (ex: “God sit with me in this anxiety”)
– “Sacred release”- write emotions on paper, pray over them, and physically release (ex: tear up, discard)
– Spiritual check in- Ask “What am I feeling? What do I need? Where is God in this?
Faith-based Physical Coping
– Prayer walks- walking while talking to God
– Deep breathing exercises- Breathing in God’s promises and exhaling fears and doubts
– Resting as an act of trust
– Grounding exercises by noticing God’s creation- ex: 5 things you can see, 4 things you can hear, 3 things you can touch, 2 things you can smell, 1 thing you can taste
– Scripture stretching- pair gentle stretches with short verses or truth
– Progressive muscle relaxation- Tense/release muscles while praying through body parts (ex: God bring peace to my shoulders…)
– Anxiety release through movement + worship- light movement while listening to worship music
– Fuel your temple- make sure you are staying hydrated and eating when necessary
